The Harlem
Museum
Is seeking to raise the funds needed to build this “State-of-the-Art” facility which can be large enough and have the capacity to conduct major international exhibitions, exhibit the Museum’s permanent collections, storage space for the Museum’s extensive collection consisting of more than 10 thousand items of exhibitions, art, artifacts, documents, books, records and video tapes, space to conduct cultural and educational programs and activities, have a research and archive library, lecture hall, office space, class rooms and meeting spaces, and a museum gift shop.
This facility will allow The Harlem Museum to provide programs and services: a. To establish, maintain operate and care for a facility as a museum and to preserve therein a collection of art and historic objects which demonstrate the universality, continuity and strength of Black & African culture;
To coordinate and present major international exhibitions of historical, cultural, visual arts and crafts created by Black persons of African descent from throughout the world.
To server as an accessible educational resource center for youth and adults who desire to learn about the culture of Blacks’ in the diaspora;
To document the variety of contributions, life styles and cultures, of Black persons of African descent, to show the interdependence that exists throughout the world among all peoples, and to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas among artists, scholars, educators, and the general public;
To provide exhibitions, theater, dance and performances designed to present and celebrate the historic and artistic contributions of Black persons of African descent from throughout the world;
The Harlem Museum’s economic development project will:

2. Provide a major tourist destination attracting visitors from across the city, state, and country as well as from around the world, increase Harlem’s percentage share of the annual $80 billion dollars visitors and tourism industry of New York City.
