The Harlem Museum proudly presents Ancient Egypt & Nubia: African Origin of Civilization, a landmark exhibition that redefines global understanding of African history, identity, and cultural legacy. Inspired by the groundbreaking scholarship of Dr. Cheikh Anta Diop and curated by Mfundishi Jhutyms Ka N Heru Hassan K. Salim, this immersive showcase spans 7,000 years of African achievement and excellence.
Featuring over 100 historically reproduced Egyptian artifacts, authentic African sculptures, and breathtaking wall and ceiling hangings, the exhibition reveals the grandeur and sophistication of the ancient Nile Valley civilizations—Kemet (Egypt) and Kash (Nubia). These cultures laid the foundation for philosophy, spirituality, science, mathematics, architecture, and systems of governance that would shape the course of human civilization.
By illuminating the ethical and moral laws of Maat, the spiritual and intellectual systems of ancient Kemet and its African roots, the exhibition affirms the central role of Black and African peoples in world history. Ancient Egypt & Nubia is a visually rich and thought-provoking experience that celebrates the enduring leadership, creativity, and influence of Africa’s great civilizations—offering a powerful, corrective narrative of pride, identity, and global contribution.
